Oprah's cinnamon-cherry ice cream

I knew it would be hard to top that other Oprah recipe since I go for the unusual, but if this one didn't have such a noticeable eggy flavor...it reminded me of eggnog (due to liquor that the cherries needed to soak in), and I never liked eggnog.

I did appreciate the adult influences with needing to soak the cherries in port (no cream sherry on hand) but all it ended up tasting like was a milder version of amarena (sour cherries in syrup stirred into plain gelato). Recipe here.

Too bad it's not that good. The name definitely sounds appetizing.

Cinnamon and Cherry is an interesting combo. Cherries are the one fruit I'm always hesitant to transform. Might just go for some homemade sour cherry jam spooned over vanilla ice cream.

That does look good, amarena is my favourite Italian flavour, you can't beat it.

Funny I just posted cherry chocolate chunk ice cream a few minutes ago. The cinnamon sounds interesting.

Never tried making ice cream at home as I find it so difficult to have the right consistency, but adore ice cream. The title took my attention and when I saw the picture, I just thought it was wonderful. Too bad you don't love it.

The picture looks wonderful. I recently tried a recipe for chocolate raspberry ice cream. It did not disappoint. I'll have to make it again to get pictures though as it disappeared way too fast.

Tales - for starters, the recipe is adapted from The Paley's Place Cookbook so I'd be curious to know what the original is like. The liquor-soaked cherries were great, just not so much in contrast with the yolk flavor.

Laura - it's not that it didn't come out good, just not too my personal tastes. Maybe someone out there would much prefer the flavor of yolks?

Ann - no strawberries? blueberries? blackberries? No orange ice cream bars?!! Ann, they are some of the greatest flavors to be had, aside from italian gelato of course ^-^...omg, cantaloupe flavor!

Gastroanthropologist - so glad you picked up on the doubtful addition of cinnamon! My husband felt the exact same way, especially since I was using dark Vignola cherries which have a very deep, full flavor.

Jenny - and let it be amarena from a really good gelateria, not that stuff from Carte d'Or (although I am guilty of impulse purchases from time to time).

Deb, Kat - hee hee, I'd forgotten that I had that tablecloth in the linen closet. One of the many from my mother-in-law. Not even put to use yet, except for this photo shoot.

Amber - sounds like a cute nickname for an equally sweet and cute child.

Holly - we be on the same wavelength? I'll check out your ice cream creation next!

Zerrin - if not for my gelato maker (Simac GC5000), I wouldn't feel as confident to make my own gelato. You are so right about the consistency, as it is key to good gelato apart from the flavor itself.

Carla - I still have your recipe for blackberry sherbet bookmarked, but I'm waiting until the blackberry prices drop a little. I'd say that berries and chocolate are always a winner.

Sounds such a great idea . What a pity it didn't turn out so well. I'm sure you could invent a better version, Rowena!

it does sound delicious. What a shame that it didn't come out as good as it sounded. I'm also not a big fan of eggy flavored things. Maybe you can take the basic concept and play around a bit with it!

Marla - not a bad idea for a garden ceramic, eh? ;-)

Petra - I abhor the mundane! Food should be an adventure, every.single.day. ^-^

WL - coming from you, I will covet that compliment. I'm waiting for peach season to hit our produce aisle so that I can try your peach and nectarine ice cream.

Alejandra - I think next time it'll just be a simple, organic, whole milk gelato affair with some amarena cherries poured over the top!
