Was I plagiarized by the author of The Cuisines of Hawaii?

Edit: I would like to point out that the following situation has been resolved and that my blog content has been removed from the CoH facebook account. That said, when publishing second-hand information, websites should know to accept the reponsibility of checking the source. I was made aware of this discrepancy by using GOOGLE.

Can't say for sure, but I have my suspicions after finding uncredited photos of mine that were published on Facebook in the first week of this month. When something like this happens you either contact the offending party or go through the proper channels to oust the perp. Me, I don't have fcuking time for that bullshit, so instead, I'll put up the page of the "whoever" that admires my work so much that I am led to believe written recipe content and accompanying photos for Ho'io fern shoots are printed in a COOKBOOK for PROFIT. What brah? Been cockaroach my post? Make one sistah TITA all agro l'dat. Regardless of the fact that even if my work MAY NOT be within the book's contents, the use of my images without credit is lame. Poser.

Kat - I was going to do the same, but you already found out that you need to be registered. I tell you, some people are freaking unreal. I don't mind sharing, hell I give stuff away, but atleast return the aloha, right? They gave nothing, and I wonder what else is in that cookbook that may be of someone else's talent and hard work. I know that YOU know what I'm feeling, but I really have to get back to that Indian Thali meal!!!

Kat - and here I thought twitter was just for fun (eh, well not so much anymore for Weiner). Thanks so much for the support, but man is it ever a crazy world!

Kat - their facebook and my post are the only results that pop up first in a google search. I'll take an apology PLUS $300 for the pics. Oh yeah, and 10 free copies of the book.

Rowena, when things like this happen, it's terrible. I'm so sorry! I hope that the person will credit you for your photographs! If you have a little time, it might be good to contact Facebook and notify them this has happened. It's not fair that your work is being appropriated by someone else. :(

That is so not cool! I don't have the talent for recipes and taking beautiful photos of my food as you do but if someone were to use one of my pics of my family or nature shots w/o my permission I WOULD BE PO'd! I am a kind and generous person and if asked would be thrilled to have someone share my stuff if I was asked first. Not so much if I feel I've been taken advantage of!

Criminal activity. And so hard to deal with, these days. A pox on them. (And thanks for the properly enthusiastic pidgin remarks!!)

My goodness, for a book, that is just having major balls. I have some of mine show up but not for a book. What's the name of the book again?

There is absolutely no excuse for plagarism. Unfortunately it happens often, and by people you would never expect to do so. I am so sorry that you have been a victim. It has happened to many of us and it is horrible!

What a rubbish thing to do, I'd be absolutely furious. I did log onto the page and read the comments. Someone has been giving a bit of grief, the response being that you and the author go back a long way. I imagine this might be the end of your friendship.

Hi everyone ^-^ - after reading the comments, I feel an apology is in order for coming off so negatively in this post because I personally hate ranting on my own blog. Yes I was peeved, but unless you know me very well, I can't resist injecting a little humor whenever I'm aggravated. I believe kudzu may have picked up on that island girl sass (as well as the MotH), because I rarely use pidgin english (and in bold no less!) whenever putting anything in virtual print.

For the record, unless Kohana Au is a pen name, I do not go way back with the author. Fecking bullshit. I do not know the person behind The Cuisines of Hawaii book. The only person to have recently contacted me from Hawaii does not write books. Part of my post was copied verbatim, the images are mine, and no one contacted me on the republishing of my work. Even though I have very strict spam filters, I check everything before deleting, so if permission was requested to use that post and I failed to send a reply, it does not make sense that someone would take the liberty to republish without explicit permission. I just checked my email...no word from Au or whoever this person is. You'd think it was simple enough to send an apology.

That said, I don't care to pursue the matter any further. It happens frequently enough that I see my stuff circulating around the net but for the most part, people do give credit. Or they apologize for using images without permission and either credit or remove the content in question.

I thank all of you for voicing your opinion/response but let's move on shall we? Today was unbelievably chaotic with TWENTY-FIVE dishes coming out of the kitchen. And it was all for lunch.

ru - if you're the ru that I know then this is a cool surprise! But even if you aren't that Ru it's still good all the same.

Thank you for taking the time to do that but if a person needs to be reminded to apologize..., then I don't know if it would be an apology worth accepting or acknowledging. The part about going way back is already a lie, otherwise he would have contacted me (the damn email is in my profile).

Grace - I did not see any comment left by you at the link above, but I did see this:

Rowena and I are old friends and go back to when I was a Featured Writer for the Kauai Menu Magazine and would send her copies to Italy. We get a lot of recipes with many of them without authors. I apololgize and will try to always post the author if possible! Thanks Grace!

Again I must iterate the fact that I know no one by the name of Kohana Au. On the About the Author page at Blurb, Au is supposed to be a man, but in a couple of these comments it would appear that the owner of the facebook page is a woman? Did someone create that account other than Mr. Au himself? It's becoming more confusing.

Nate - unless I know for sure that Mr. Au is behind the facebook account, it wouldn't be ethical on my part to get even. Could be an agency's marketing ploy to sell more books.

Jess - I am going to bring this post up to date with some information on Kauai Menu Magazine.

Goodness me it seems I am not the only one who has been having a stressful time recently Rowena. How an earth did you find out your work and photos were being plagerised in this way! I bet you are devastated and angry, hope you decide to take it further, surely FB and or the publishers of the book would be of assistance. They need to be named and shamed.

LindyLou - statcounter recently upgraded their system and now I can see the search engine results that took a reader to my blog. Those results will include similiar content of course, and that is how I find where my work is being used. Stressful? Angry? For the time that I've had to invest in dealing with this that is sure. I have posts on the back burner waiting to be published! My content is not in the book which means no legal grounds for suing, but it is really a damn shame that we as writers, photographers and cooks are deprived of knowing the original source material of our fellow bloggers.

I find it very difficult to understand the mentality of such people Rowena. I even go out of my way to inform people I am using videos they have made available on YouTube for public embedding as it seems a simple courtesy to do so and also to credit them.

LindyLou - you do a noble deed to youtube users. I don't even do that, seeing how the user's name will show up on the clip. It's when someone makes it look as if they are the ones behind the work that spoils it for the rest of us. Unless they just crawled out from under a rock, the internet was made for sharing information, not keeping it to yourself.

Wow Rowena! I just found your lovely blog and saw this post. That is crap - I hope that you get some sort of credit for your work somehow, even if its not through those folks who took it from you. :-(

Personally - I love you blog! Your food posts about make me cry from hunger - thanks alot by the way, considering I just went on a strict pre-wedding diet. LOL. Your pictures are fantastic and I love your sass!

Stacey - thank you for the compliments, but really I am just a small fish in a big pond...of so many blogs! I am just glad that I got that facebook account to open their eyes a little wider before putting contend up on their site. You'd think some people would know to do that beforehand.
