The weather in Italy in June

Cloudy, cool, rainy, damp, foggy, occasional hail and so unsummer-like. For this area of the northern lakes and I believe much of the peninsula's upper third, June has been looking pretty wet so far. We get updates from MotH's folks near Milan and it's the same, if not worse, so they, us, and all the rest of the landlubbers have been waiting for a break in this monotonous weather. And a break is what we had yesterday. The skies cleared up a bit and we headed out for the huge commercial shopping center along with every other soul that felt deserving of a little retail therapy. I had intentions of taking photos of Maddie going shopping in Ikea and Leroy Merlin (a Home Depot type of store) where doggies are allowed as long as they are on a leash, but I forgot the camera at home.
Gloomy weather does have its purpose though because that's when projects are born out. After the initial stage of designing a simple pergola for the terrace, the Man of the House purchased and prepped all of the pieces, waited until the skies cleared, then rang the neighbor for a helping hand. Yesterday was one of the nicest days in the whole month.

BEFORE

AFTER
The only thing left are the pieces to lay across the top. We still haven't decided on what type of vining plant to grow as shade cover (no grapes or flowering ones because of the bugs) so in the meantime it's back to Ikea to look for cloth that is sturdy and appropriate. I like the diffused lighting and fluid look that this draped ceiling gives. Any ideas?

wow that is nice! I would want to hang candles in old cans or bottles...
Ditto what Kat said:)

Ooh, how about a nice wide blue and white striped fabric?
Red flowing fabric would look great against the backdrop of your greenery.
When I was in Italy last year the weather was staggered - lots of rain with occasional breaks of burning sun. In Tuscany we were pelted with the most violent hail storm I have seen, even by Canadian standards it was surprising!

Kat, TK - I've been collecting the 1.5L fiasco-style chianti wine bottles...they just might come in handy for some lighting ideas!
Saretta - we'll see what Ikea has to offer as that's the only place I can think of that would have suitable fabric. I just hope for some variety of choices.
Murissa - the weather can be such a misfit at times but as long as I can have tomatoes in July I'll be one happy camper!
Rowena, your pergola is going to make a wonderful addition to your patio. I clicked on the link you provided and that is one amazing pergola! The light streaming through it is out of this world beautiful! I love your spacious backyard and hurray for husbands that are handy men!
Bella - the best part is that now I will be able to properly hang my sheets! Attach a line from one pole to another and capture that smell of fresh mountain air and sunshine.
Crummy weather indeed - here on the coast as well. We're still driving around in long pants, socks and jackets in the middle of June - too strange. I love the look of the draped fabric, but like even better plants. We've been very happy with wisteria - it's not too messy (well, a little) and doesn't attract rats the way grapes or kiwi would. Why do you not want flowers? In any event, it's a great looking pergola - complimenti!
Fern - and here I thought you both had it better weatherwise! Thanks for the input on the pergola. We like the idea of both plants and fabric, but need to keep it simple in the event we aren't around to water said plants. And I refuse to go with fake plastic anything!
