Casa dell'acqua

What's this? A water house? I remember getting so excited over the raw milk machines a few years back but seeing this water dispensing unit had me thrilled, and for good reason. The ‘Staff of Life’ broke headlines a mere month ago when the entire peninsula voted on a referendum to overturn a government law allowing the privatization of water services. Everyone, it seemed, was holding their breath on the outcome. I had followed the news with enough interest to know that if the referendum had failed, the next day I would've gone out to buy his and her rain barrels (you never know when they might come in handy). A good thing that the people prevailed...for the time being.

Still, this blog is not a platform to discuss the disagreements between the italian government and the people of this country, so back to this water house that I recently spotted. There are 2 rates listed: 4 euro cents/liter for residents with a special key and 5 euro cents for those without. That's a large savings compared to the 32.5 cents that we normally pay per liter. Bring your own bottles and select from either regular or carbonated H20. I thought this was pretty nifty until I thought about winter - not sure how I'm going to like filling up 24 bottles of water while standing in 32°F weather in the snow.

We don't take euro pennies.

Luckily in Canada the penny is still accepted. I am rolling a ton up tomorrow and exchanging it for vacation money - hey, I am not too proud. As you said, money is money right?

Mint chocolate chip is one of my favourites as well!

Oh, you northerners are so cutting edge! No water houses down here...

You even make your own ice cream bars? You are amazing!

Rowena, where I live they don't have water houses but I sure wish we had one, given those prices! I pay fifty euro cents per liter! How's the taste, by the way. And please don't tell me water doesn't taste like anything, like the Significant Other. I will only buy certain types of bottled water and belive it or nor, Evian is not one of them. Now hand over a homemade popsicle stick, please!

Kat - not only the government, even businesses! At one of the supermarkets that we always shop at, they ROUND OFF the total bill to the lowest 5 or 10 cents! If it's 20.11€, it becomes 20.10; if it's 20.19€, they chop it to 20.15!

Wanderfull T - not sure what the size of a canadian penny but euro pennies are ridiculously small. It would be difficult to roll them up...you'd have a roll the diameter of a cigarette.

Saretta - ahh...but the system is not without a few minor inconveniences. It is said that you must use the water within 48 hours and I guess that's due to the BYOB (bring your own bottles) concept which naturally isn't going through a sterilization process. I can't see myself being able to run down to the water house every 2 days either.

Bella - 50 cents! The taste of both regular and carbonated was just fine (I really was concerned for this) so that water house is doing a good enough of job of filtering out the nasties. Still, unless they put up a unit in our community, I am not inclined to haul bottles to that water house across the lake. It's not THAT far but if the suggestion says to use the water within 48 hours, that means I'm hauling my glass and ass over there more than I'd like to.

Wow that is great.I love the idea of reducing waste. We have the milk ones but I am going to pay better attention. Maybe we have the water too.

Nicole - the only thing I found in Bergamo on a quick google search was Mozzanica, but surely there are some closer to BG. I like how they have on their website Per evitare il formarsi di code ed inevitabili discussioni, è previsto che l'approvvigionamento massimo di acqua pro-capite sia per un massimo di 6 bottiglie. Some people can be so spoiled like that, compared to those in 3rd world countries who not only stand in line, but walk for miles to even get there!
