Where to find really good gelato in Italy?

Forums and travel sites can lead you to the best there is in any given major city in Italy, but what of those smaller towns or communities that just might be on your itinerary around the peninsula? I've been referring to the site GELATO artigianale for a few good leads and while they don't seem to update their info across the board (for example: GROM is mentioned in Florence but not for Milan or Lecco), the list of gelaterie from here AND around the world is impressive. Training it south to Vibo Valentia? Flying out to Djibouti? Check out the link Gelaterie Novità! to the left and click Gelaterie in Italia (by province) or Gelaterie nel mondo respectively. Shops are also listed alphabetically.

At the rate in which gelato businesses keep popping up, it's probably safe to assume that not all are mentioned on the website. If you have any favorites where you live, tell us!

Well, if you come down to Molfetta in Puglia, you have to choose between Gelateria San Marco (for the traditionalist), Gelateria Lena (nice 'cause you can sit down and eat your gelato while looking at the port) or Gelateria Ice Cream (which has gluten and lactose free gelati). How to choose?

Hi there.

My absolute favorite Italian gelato is the cassata gelato from Bar Pasticerria A Chemi in Taormina, Sicily.

Just looking at a picture of it makes me salivate:)

If you are in San Gimiagnano, the gelateria right in the largest square justifiably advertises as being "world's best.".
And they are.

In Rome, Settimo Gelo in Prato.

In Lucca, Momo.

In verona, the one across from the castle is good, the one at the beginning. Of the pedestrian zone off from the arena is fantastic.

Sorry, I forget the names. General rule of thumb: if there is a line, get on the end of it. It'll be worth it

We are heading to Europe after AU, and I hope I can stop over in Italy, because you are drilling it in that I must have Gelato (although I've had a good rendition of it here in Japan). I would love to visit where my grandmother was born, never been to Sicily.

Saretta - if I'm ever down in Molfetta I'm visiting all of them!

TK - Taormina duly noted!

Kelly - I am certain that readers out there are furiously scribbling notes. Thanks for the tip!

Kat - would you believe that we went to a place yesterday and shared three cones between us? Greedies.

elle marie - I just ask that you remember the names and addresses (atleast the town). Photos always appreciated of course!
