I'll take a scoop of Smurf, Glo Worm, and Magnum P.I.

In the fine print of gelato rules and regulations, it never would've occurred to me that the shockingly blue Puffo flavor (pronounced POOH-foh in Italy) could ever show up in a place that serves the real artigianale stuff. Well I was wrong. Apparently neon hues and cute characters are fair game as long as the primary ingredients (that would be milk, cream, sweetener) did not come from a toxic waste dump. But a Smurf? Are you kidding me??
Gelateria La Fragola is listed on the gelatoartigianale site which is the only reason why we stopped in. Oh, and they also have free wi-fi. The Smurf/puffo tasted like vanilla. Atomic green Glo Worm (actually I just made that up - remember the Hasbro toy?) had a strange menta/mint taste, and Magnum was not Tom Selleck in a Ferrari per se - now wouldn't that be fun - but is the name of a commercially-produced ice cream bar. By the way, that would be pronounced MAH-n'yoom. Nice little corner place in Mariano Comense to take the kids. La, la, la-la la la...sing a happy song. La, la, la-la la la smurf the whole day long.

I used to order puffo gelato all the time when I was little. For some reason I thought it was ok for icecream to be bright blue.
I would order that blue gelato just to make my tongue blue :) oh and those magnum ice cream bars are all the rage in Hawaii now, see them all over, gotta try one before I go back.
Mention the smurfs and I'm taken back in time.
Did any of you collect the smurf figurines back in the day?
Mini mint magnums were my favorite bars back home in NZ. Mm mmm MAH-n'yoom.
Have you tried Spiderman? :-) It's strawberry...
Chiara - from a kid's point of view, any color should be okay for an icecream. The brighter the better!
Kat - I should've taken a photo of mine ^-^
TK - we had the stuffed dolls but isn't there also a dance move named after them?
Saretta - no Spiderman here yet. I am surprised that no one came up with a Berlusconi but I suppose that would be in bad taste?
When I was little I always went for the neon colours. The Blue would usually be bubblegum and the pink was cotton candy. The orange and black was another favourite and is known as Tiger Tiger with a liquorice and orange taste. Now I am more of a chocolate fan as these are usually too sweet.

Colors not found in nature... think I'll stick to straciatella. But I'm such an old fart I don't even like blue toenail polish. Blue M&M's are a stretch. Blue berries are divine.
Doesn't shave ice come in some interesting colors/flavors?
Rowena, I saw your post and squealed! You see, just tonight we went to an "heladeria" that makes "artisan" type ice cream and had the ice cream flavor "Pitufo"! Smurf in English. And like yours, it was blue! I thought it so comical to see how you were savoring it in your corner of the world, while I was tasting it here in mine! Mine was not too impressive either. For all it's bright color, it was quite bland.
WT - I would definitely give that Tiger Tiger a try, but now that you mention it, I'll just go for liquirizia (licorice) and orange.
Fern - rainbow colors for shave ice thank you. Plus a scoop of vanilla icecream and sweet azuki beans at the bottom.
Bella - that is too cute and too cool, and I'm glad that you have that "try it atleast once" attitude. That blue should stay in an eyeshadow kit where it belongs.
Call me old fashioned but I think I'll stick to the amerena.
They didn't release the Puffo just in time for The Smurfs now, did they?
While it all looks interesting, I think I'll go hunt down a cup of my usual candied fig or cioccolato e chile over at Gelatissimo...
Jenny - you're not old-fashioned, you're just settled in your gelato "tastes".
Midge - puffo has been around for YEARS. And it took me YEARS to finally give it a go...not that I thought I was missing out on anything.
