Up on the rooftop: making italian tegole

Italian rooftop tiles

In Hawaii it was either corrugated metal roofing (on the old plantation buildings) or cedar shake (wooden shingles) on the homes that I lived in, so to move here and see these lovely tiles instead was an interesting feature although I never went beyond “Oh, how cool!” This is the view of our neighbor's house that is blocking my view of the swiss alps out yonder. Okay, so not cool at all, even if they are great neighbors, but I just wanted to use their industrially produced roof tiles as modern contrast to old-style tegole (singular tegola) from materials that I wouldn't have even thought of. Just love those roof tiles. In my next life, I want a mediterranean-style home with tegole.

The art of watching something handmade is amazing! In addition, I just love those tiles against the blue of the turquoise sea and sky!

CC Linda - I'm all for that idea!

Frizzy - isn't it? I know that old, discarded tiles are also given new life as painted and decorated wall hangings.

WT - this roof tile post will hopefully lead up to something even more insightful. Stay tuned!

Kat - some of the really older homes up here have tiles that look like they've been around for ages. Moss and/or lichen growing on them!

Rowena, the tegole making process is incredible! Who would've thought so much work goes into making each tile! Beautiful! Just another reason for me to move to Italy! I want a home with beautiful tegole!
