Kauai's beaches, beach walks, beach dogs, beach eats

I had all of these ambitious (read: unrealistic) plans for outdoor rec activities while we were on Kauai, but in the end what we did most is a thing that every visitor dreams of doing as soon as they touch ground: go to the beach. It might come as a surprise that I'm really not much of a sand and surf person anymore, but the MotH being where he's from, was more than ready to slip into a temporary lifestyle as beach bum.

The beaches that we went to are all accessible by Kauai's public transport which is how we wanted to get around if a car wasn't absolutely necessary. One in particular - Kealia Beach - is part of the Kapa'a coastal path, a 4.1 mile paved walkway perfect for walkers, joggers and bicycle riders. Kapa'a town is on the eastside of Kauai and home to funky cool coffee shops and breakfast joints, but it is this shoreline path that makes it stand out from the rest of the island as it is the only one at the moment.

Teri-fried chicken plate
From Da Imu Hut in Hanapepe. Two scoops white rice, mac salad and teri-fried chicken. Ono! (Best with beer).

Kat - would you believe that we didn't put on any extra weight even if we were eating all that high-calorie local stuff and drinking TONS of beer? Could also be for the heat...we sure perspired enough while there!

Nate - was 8 bucks but I should add that the owner of the restaurant is a long-time schoolmate from since the 1st grade. It's the first time I tried the teri fried chicken (always used to order the laulau plate) so not sure if she just maxed me out for old times' sake. Everybody raves about the teri fried chicken, and was really ono!

Meredith - on the next visit I just might look into staying overnight somewhere in Hanalei. Would have loved to do the Na Pali Coast trail but for that one you need to start early if you want to go the whole way. Hanalei is so beautiful!

The beaches are as beautiful as I remember - how I'd love to go back and try some of that teri fried chicken. I guess you always know from which direction the winds blow. Love the friendly doggie - where did your kids stay while you were away?

Fern - Kauai's beaches certainly know how to seduce a lot of visitors. I think of the ones that I did miss...like Lumahai and Ke'e all the way at the end of Haena. Next time, next time! As for the kids, we put them up in a kennel. Would you believe that the Mister barked at us as if we were intruders? It took him about 15 seconds before he realized who we were. Ohhh...you're BACK!? He had adopted the kennel owner as his new pack leader. I thought I'd never see the day when he'd allow someone else to hug him, but there he was happy as a clam in the new pack leader's arms.
