Omigosh it's Papanasi!

Papanasi

What's deep-fried, smothered in heavy cream and jam, dusted with powdered sugar and has who-knows-or-even-cares-how-many-calories? Hands in the air if you don't accurately count calories either, but if you happen to be in Romania, the answer to that question would be papanasi. Constructed with a donut-like round as the main base and a donut hole on top of the delicious mess, papanasi is simply made out of cottage cheese, lemon zest, eggs, sugar, baking soda and flour. The heavy cream and fruit jam is what pushes this romanian dessert into the category of “things to try atleast once in your life” but my hunch is that one will never be enough. A list of useful recipe and youtube links help guide the process of putting these together which is very quick and easy. Not to worry if you can't understand the videos; just watch the steps. Incidentally, I titled this post as such because the pronunciation of papansi (it sounded like pah-pah-nahsh to my ears) had me exclaiming omigoshpapanosh!

Candylei, Kat - I am gonna make these for the folks back home. I've read that dulce de leche is also used as another sauce variation so I'm thinking....lightly sweetened soft-whipped cream and warm dulce de leche poured over papanasi. OMIGOD!

I must admit I love papanasi - making them and eating them. What I truly like is that they are easy to do ad very-very tasteful ;) It is actually the preferred desert of all my friends coming to visit me;)

I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do :)

Bella - sorry for being such a tease, but honestly I need the carbs and cals for the kind of hiking we do! I'll try to tone it down next week.

Midge - if it were, I can only say that 2 (or more) wrongs make everything right. Heehee. I have got to see the reaction on my friends and family's faces when they get a load of this.

A good reason, perhaps the *only* reason to travel to Romania. I wonder, with some many Romanians living in Italy, is this unbelievable creation possible to get in Lecco?

Andrew - in Lecco no; in Milan maybe. And as for the *only* reason to visit Romania, I can't believe you opened yourself up to that one! These are some very valid reasons for visiting Romania, but second to papanasi is to stay in a castle in Transylvania!

Per WikiAnswers (sì sì...sono pigra): prehistoric sites ... very accessible women, etc.

Girl there is so much more to Romania. While, yes the papanasi are great, there is sarmale, Zapata de beouff, mamaliga cu brabza si smantana!! Plus the people are v.friendly!!

And yes, I do need to get back to blogging, but it still baffles me that complete strangers find my mental ramblings interesting.

Btw, I will be in La Spezia at the end of October for the 4th time!!!!

Odessa - I've always had the feeling that there was more to Europe than meets the eye, but stumbling upon expat blogs living on the eastern side happens only once in a while. I don't want to hear the tourist stuff, I want to hear the real deal, the things that only a person living there could be able to tell. Okay, you're off the hook until after you get back from La Spezia (have a great time!), because around that time I should be over my jet lag and 100% recuperated from a visit to the 50th state.
