Happy Saint Martin's Day Weckmänner!

I bet there'll be more than 1,111 ways to acknowledge today's date but seeing as it is also the feast day of Martin of Tours, I reflected back on last year's post and my intent to roast a goose this time around. Unfortunately...sigh...there was no stupid goose, not even a part of it, in any of the main grocery stores that I raided (and yes I checked the frozen bird section).

Of course there is more than one way to get back at that missing goose on St. Martin's Day so I just baked one, along with the german Weckmänner. Also known as stutenkerl (dough guy) and a host of other names depending on where you are in Germany, he is just a sweet dough creation that will be on the dinner table tonight along with swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, braised red cabbage and a bottle of new wine. Salute!

Kat - it's funny how Italy isn't even mentioned on the wikipedia page for St. Martin's Day, even if it's a recognized date in Venice. The food tradition there are these uber-decorated horse cookies but I'm liking the german and polish goodies a lot more!

With my vast experience in eating, I don't recall every noshing on some goose. I'll have to make this happen.
LOVE the punkins.

I went to a great sagra for St. Martin's day in Mendrisio... it was lots of fun and I bought some very expensive but incredibly good breads, cheeses and mostarda!

carlae - remember the tag game Duck, Duck, Goose? We learned early on that the goose's days were numbered.

Chiara - for whatever odd reason, I like St. Martin's Day more than Thanksgiving, and that is probably due to the fact that I'd rather have goose over turkey any day! I hope you share your stash!

These are delightful and I bet super yummy. Did you bake some special for your furry kids--meaning puppies.

Candylei - the kids got something else....purple carrots! Doesn't matter what color - they ♥ carrots!

Welshcakes - I take it that you mean sweet dough boy and not Silvio the lantern! (although he was rather funny lighting up the windowsill)
