What every ex-kama'aina needs for Christmas

Foodland Poke Bowl tote
A reusable shopping bag. From Foodland. I should be getting paid to plug this product but I don't think marketing was ever a problem from the beginning, plus I'd guess that it's already a collector's item fetching several Hamiltons on ebay. Don't they just scream out Hawaii? There's a Poke Bowl tote and a Musubi tote; both also come/came in insulated zipper-top versions as well.

I had no idea that Hawaii had finally caught up and started replacing plastic until my dad told us to use his synthetic fiber Walmart totes. My youngest sister presented these as parting gifts when we left Kauai in October, but of course only recently did I get up enough nerve to devalue their worth by actually using them. Bags from supermarkets here are about 1½ times bigger but not as colorfully ...decorative. Are you listening supermercati?

Thats great that reusable shopping bags are catching up in many places. I was surprised that in mauritius the supermarkets now charge for plastic bag, encouraging many to bring their reusable ones.

I still gotta get my mom to stop taking plastic bags from certain stores, think it's gonna take some time...I stopped using my Spam musubi one outside, was getting too many weird looks.

Nicole - baby steps at a time...even if I don't agree with the paper bags that they've subbed for plastic (in some stores like Times supermarket).

Kat - I can only imagine how weird those looks were! A few supermarkets here are still using plastic but in the name of not wasting the stockpile that they still need(really?) to unload. There was this lady last night and she had like 2 shopping carts full of food, NO BAGS of her own, not of one, and so the clerk kept shoving plastic bags at her. What a disgrace.

Candylei - I picked up turkey spam on our last trip back so I'll be having some musubi sooner or later!

Very fun bags!
All of mine are just dark green or black. Seems like everyone is giving these types of bags away, from my hair salon to liquor stores.

Gwen - if it weren't for my sister, I'd have never known about these. Too fun and cute.

WT - the bags at major supermarkets charge around 1€ or so for their logo totes. I have some from when I just moved here.

carlae - I see there's no chance of you pawning that puppy off!

Fern - there's a new Billa in town although we still haven't checked it out. Now I'm curious about the bag!

Welshcakes - they really should take note. Extra sales for them and it helps cut down the use of plastic. Come on people!

I luv my spam musubi bag!!! Moreover, whenever I use it (here in South Africa) the clerks always make a fun comment about it--I like to think the bag brightens up their day. :)
