An artsy kind of Sunday + a pissing penguin

Ragazza alla finestra

“I'm sorry, but the Don says no dogs allowed in the big tent [dining area]”, informs the voice on the other end of the line. Well shucks. And that pretty much closed the door on us attending a parish-hosted canunsei sagra (filled ravioli) complete with animal blessing near Brescia the other day, so it was on to plan B and the open-air art gallery - la galleria all'aperto dell'affresco - at Arcumeggia.

Il soldato che non vuole la guerraJust 15 miles northwest of Varese, Arcumeggia gained recognition after the provincial board for tourism turned it into a painted village in 1956. A league of italian artists added life to the old walls, creating a suggestive place in a rather isolated spot high in the mountains. Some of the paintings, naturally, are chipped or have faded away through the years yet it's difficult to not appreciate the timeless setting while leisurely exploring the silent cobbled streets. There were no other visitors to speak of while we were there, so I'm not sure if the village sees more people during the rest of the year. FYI: the 2 miles before reaching the village is a narrow stretch of winding road, blind curves and hairpin turns up the mountain.

And for a different kind of artsy fun...

Lecco street art

Back in October of 2011, the event Lecco Street Art was set into action at via Ferriera. One of the boldly colored works is an 8-bit style pixel image of a blue penguin that artist Pao cleverly animates in a brief youtube clip.

Aw, pity about the doggies not being allowed in. But the paintings look fun.

Kat, Midge - a good thing we called, but I find it really lame that for an event that includes the blessing of animals, the "no dog" restriction, even for small ones like ours, was even an issue. So you show up at noon for the sagra but your dog or cat or chicken, bunny, duck etc has to stay outside of the tent? They could have atleast stated the restriction on the info flyer, right next to part about the animal blessing. To their credit, they did say that we could secure our two outside the tent, but can you imagine our dogs (especially the Mister) with a bunch of other animals??? He would waste no time going after the cats.

Yeah, that sounds kind of a contraddiction, to have to leave the dogs out...
